PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
Albendazole is a benzimidazole carbamate with activity antiprotozoal and anthelmintic against intestinal parasites and tissue. Animal studies have shown that albendazole exhibits vermicidal, and activity ovacidal larvacidal and exert its effect anthelmintic inhibiting polymerization causes tubulin .lsto disruption of helminth metabolism ,including depletion of energy, which then immobilize and kill the susceptible helminth.
WARNINGS
It was noted that the leucopaenia occurred when used for periods longer than recommended.
INDICATIONS
Albendazole is indicated for the treatment of single or parasites intestinal mixed.
Clinical studies have shown the treatment of albeneffective Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm), Trichuris trichiura of (Whipworm) of Enterobius vermicularis(pinworm / threadworm) of Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus(hookworm), Taenia spp. (Tapeworm) and Strongyloides stercoralis.
Albendazole has been shown to be effective in treating Giardia infections (duodenalis or lamblia or intestinalis) in children.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Albendazole is known to be teratogenic and embryotoxic in animals. The safety of albendazole during pregnancy has not been established, and Albendazole should not be taken by women pregnant at any stage of your pregnancy or by women who are likely to become pregnant during or shortly after the course of therapy. Albendazole is contra-indicated in patients with a history or known hypersensitivity to albendazole or constituents.
DOSAGE AND USUGE
Usual dose:
-Adults and children over 2 years: 400mg as a single dose.
-Children 1-2 years: 5 mL (200mg) as a single dose.
In heavy infestation involving mixed or Strongyloides Taeniasis ,a single daily dose may be inadequate and the dose can be given for three consecutive days.
Note:If the patient is not cured after three weeks, a second course treatment can be given. No special procedure, such as fasting or remove. is required. Albendazole has not been adequately studied in children under one years of age.
Giardiasis (dose in children over 2 years old): A single dose of 400mg daily for five days.
SIDE-EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
The discomfort, diarrhea, headache and dizziness Gastrointestinal been reported.
Hypersensitivity reactions including rash. pruritus and the urticaria have been reported less
frequently.
STORAGE
Store in a cool place (below 25ºC). Protect the suspension from light.
